HUETTER ROAD CORRIDOR STUDY

KMPO is nearing completion of a right of way and alignment study for a north-south roadway between US95 and SH41, to serve growth on the Rathdrum Prairie and regional mobility needs in the future.  The Huetter Road area has long been discussed as a potential corridor for a new major route.  The purpose of this right of way study is to determine the right of way needed for such a route, and to recommend methods of preserving the right of way so that the public cost of developing the route in the future is minimized.

Key products of the study include a determination of where the new route will likely be constructed and how much right of way to set aside; an environmental scan; and policy direction for preserving a right of way corridor as adjacent properties develop and the region continues to grow.

Many different conceptual alignments have been examined for the Huetter Corridor, along with an alternative proposal to develop Greensferry Road instead of Huetter.  Based on an examination of future travel demands and regional mobility needs, a 4 to 6-lane controlled access facility is envisioned that will serve high speed traffic.  On August 2, 2007, after reviewing technical information and considering public comment received, the KMPO Board adopted an alignment for the future Huetter Corridor.

At present, environmental work is underway, and KMPO will be coordinating with affected agencies (City of Coeur d’Alene, City of Post Falls, City of Hayden and Kootenai County) to establish formal procedures for preserving the right of way needed.  It is anticipated that a combination of building set back requirements, zoning requirements, right of way dedication through annexation, and property acquisition will be needed to secure the corridor for the future.  See our Frequently Asked Questions and other documents below for more information.
